There's always something to do around the house.
A drawer that needs organizing. A room that could use cleaning. Something outside that needs trimming. A project you've been meaning to get to for the last three weekends.
And then along comes Labor Day—an extra day at home—and it's tempting to turn it into one big catch-up day.
But maybe today doesn't have to be about getting everything done.
Maybe it can be about enjoying some of what you've worked so hard to create.
Do One Thing That Makes Home Feel Better
I'm not going to tell you not to touch a single household project today. 😂
If there's something small that's been bothering you, handle it.
Clear off the kitchen counter. Change the sheets. Sweep the porch. Finally put away that basket of laundry that's been sitting there staring at you.
But here's the key:
Pick one thing—not seventeen.
Sometimes a 20-minute reset is all it takes to make home feel a little better without sacrificing your entire day.
Eat Something Good
Labor Day and good food just belong together.
Fire up the grill. Make the side dish everybody asks for. Cut up some watermelon. Order takeout if cooking sounds like the exact opposite of a holiday. 😂
And if you can, sit down and actually enjoy it.
Not standing over the kitchen counter.
Not folding laundry between bites.
Sit outside. Gather around the table. Invite somebody over—or enjoy the quiet if you have the house to yourself.
The point isn't what you're eating.
It's slowing down long enough to enjoy it.
Spend Some Time Outside
We're getting close to that transition between summer and fall, which makes Labor Day a good time to enjoy the spaces outside your four walls.
Sit on the porch.
Take a walk around the neighborhood.
Let the kids play outside.
Pull out the lawn chairs.
Drink your coffee somewhere other than the kitchen.
You don't have to leave home to feel like you've gotten away for a little while.
Make a Memory That Doesn't Require Much
Family time doesn't always need an itinerary.
Pull out a board game. Watch a movie everybody gets to vote on. Go through old pictures. Make dessert together. Turn some music on and let the kids take over the playlist.
Years from now, nobody is going to remember whether the baseboards were clean on Labor Day.
But they might remember laughing around the table.
Sometimes the ordinary moments become the ones we keep.
Give Yourself Permission to Rest
This might be the most important one.
Sit down.
Seriously. 😂
There will be another load of laundry.
There will be another email.
There will be another project.
Labor Day exists because work matters—but so does the person doing the work.
And our homes shouldn't only be places where we keep another list of things that need our attention.
They should also be places where we can exhale.
A Little Less Labor, A Little More Living
Making house home isn't always about improving something.
Sometimes it's about enjoying what's already there.
The people.
The food.
The couch you've fallen asleep on more times than you'd admit.
The porch.
The noise.
The quiet.
The imperfect, lived-in spaces where real life happens.
So if you accomplish something around the house today, great.
But don't let your entire Labor Day become another workday.
Do a little less laboring—and a little more living.
Happy Labor Day. 💚
